From mid-July to mid-August, fireflies light up the night around Lake Aoki, a spring-fed lake near Hakuba. Big Thrills on the River

Canyoning in Hakuba involves swimming, jumping, abseiling, and navigating whitewater chutes using ropes. The best conditions are in late spring and early summer when water levels are highest. 4). Zenkoji Temple

One Hour by Bus or Car

Zenkoji is a 7th century Buddhist temple and one of Japan’s most important temples. It is said to hold the first Buddhist Icon that was brought to Japan via China. It is free to explore the temple grounds and costs ¥500 to enter the temple. It is easily accessible from Nagano Station.

5). Togakushi

Forests and Shrines

The Togakushi Shrines sit in an ancient forest 40k from Hakuba. Togakushi consists of 5 Shinto Shrines connected by roads and hiking trails lined with trees all over 800 years old. It’s a stunning example of the fusion of nature and religion within Japanese culture. Togakushi is only 40k from Hakuba, but it is not easily accessible by public transportation. It is best to drive here.
